World Animal Day is a day of awareness and action for animal rights and welfare. The international holiday was established in 1931 by ecologists in Florence, Italy, who were concerned about the plight of endangered species.

It is celebrated on October 4, the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of Animals. The day is also recognized by Catholics as the Blessing of the Animals Day.
